Application Guidelines for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship of SISU 2026

To address the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate the global development of Chinese language education, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (hereinafter referred to as “CLEC”) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as “the Scholarship”) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, select HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, and Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as “Recommending Institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to pursue their studies in International Chinese Language Education and related programs at Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as “Host Institutions”).

I. ELIGIBILITY

All applicants must:

1.Be a non-Chinese citizen;

2.Maintain a friendly attitude toward China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the Host Institution;

3.Be in good physical and mental health, and demonstrate strong academic performance and conduct;

4.Be committed to working in Chinese language education, teaching, and related fields;

5.Be between the ages of 16 and 35 (as of September 1, 2026). The age limit is extended to 45 for in-service Chinese language teachers, while applicants for undergraduate scholarships must generally be under the age of 25.

II. SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES AND APPLICATION CONDITIONS

1.Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education

The program commences in September 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to two academic years.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants must score at least 210 on the HSK (Level 5) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an employment agreement (or equivalent proof) from a teaching institution for post-graduation employment.

2.Bachelor’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education

The program commences in September 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to four academic years.

Applicants must hold a senior high school diploma. Applicants must score at least 210 on the HSK (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an employment agreement (or equivalent proof) from a teaching institution for post-graduation employment

3.One-Year Study Program

The program commences in September 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to 11 months. ·

l International Chinese Language Education: Applicants must score at least 270 on the HSK (Level 3) and possess an HSKK score. ·

l Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, etc.: Applicants must score at least 180 on the HSK (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level). ·

l Chinese Language Study: Applicants must score at least 210 on the HSK (Level 3). Priority will be given to those who provide an HSKK score.

In principle, applicants who have received the same type of scholarship within the past 3 years will not be admitted.

4.One-Semester Study Program

The program commences either in September 2026 or March 2027, with a scholarship duration of up to five months. ·

l International Chinese Language Education, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, etc.: Applicants must score at least 180 on the HSK (Level 3) and possess an HSKK score. ·

In principle, applicants who have received the same type of scholarship within the past 3 years will not be admitted.

5.Four-Week Study Program

The program commences either in July or December 2026, with a scholarship duration of up to four weeks. ·

l Tracks: Chinese Language Study

l Requirements: Applicants must possess an HSK score. Recommending Institutions may organize group applications, and must contact the Host Institution in advance to finalize the study plan in China and submit it to CLEC for pre-approval. Each group shall consist of 10-15 people.

The Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (four-week study students excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses. For details, please visit the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) website (https://pmplatform.chinese.cn/ui/start/#/login). 

III. APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1.Applicants should log in to the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (https://pmplatform.chinese.cn/ui/start/#/login) to upload application materials online; and track the application progress, comments and results.  

2.When the application procedure arrives at the “Host institutions verification”, an applicant should log in to the SISU International Student Service System (https://sisu.at0086.cn/StuApplication/Login.aspx) and register again.

3.SISU will verify application materials and examine the applicant.  

4.An applicant should log in to the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website to track the results three months ahead before school starts.

5.The Application Deadlines (Beijing Time): 

(1) July admission: Student applications close April 15

(2) September admission: Student applications close May 15

(3) December admission: Student applications close September 15

(4) March 2027 admission: Student applications close October 31

IV. APPLICATION MATERIALS

1.For all applicants:  

(1) A scanned copy of the Passport Information Page that will not expire on or before his graduation/completion time;  

(2) An applicant shall submit a valid Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (or Police Clearance Certificate) issued by the local public security (such as the police station), usually issued within six months prior to the submission date of the application attached with a notarized Chinese or English translation only if it isn’t written in Chinese or English originally;  

(3) An applicant shall submit a copy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Medical examination results are valid for only six months;  

(4) Certificate of language proficiency. When applying for a Chinese-taught program, an applicant shall provide a valid HSK score report that meets the program’s language ability requirements; Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can be exempted from submitting HSK certificates if they can provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institution where they work.    

(5) A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions.    

2.For degree scholarship program applicants  

(6) Diploma and certificate of highest education (notarized photocopy). An applicant who is currently enrolled shall submit the proof of expected graduation or student status by his/her university;  

(7) Academic record. An applicant shall submit a notarized Chinese or English translation version if it isn’t written in Chinese or English originally;  

(8) A study or research plan written in Chinese or English (no less than 200 words/characters for undergraduates; no less than 500 words/character for scholars; no less than 1000 words/characters for postgraduates);  

(9) Applicants of the Scholarship for Bachelor students are required to provide a reference letter from high school. Applicants of the Scholarship for Master students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.    

3.In-service Chinese language teachers may submit proof of employment and a recommendation letter from their employer. These applicants will be given priority over equally qualified candidates. Applicants who have been awarded the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate in various Chinese Bridge competitions should log in to the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website and submit their application materials to their target Host Institution, along with their scholarship certificate.

4.Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.
