Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teacher Scholarship of SISU 2022

For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship).

Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers for study of International Chinese Language Education or related majors at Sichuan International Studies University (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).

   

ELIGIBILITY

a) Non-Chinese citizens;

b) Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the school;

c) In good physical and mental conditions, and with a good record of academic performance and conduct;

d) Aspiring to work in the Chinese language education and related fields;

e) Aged between16 and 35 (as of 1stSeptember, 2022), with the special allowance for the age limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers and that of 25 for undergraduate student applicants.

   

SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATION

 

   COVERAGE AND CRITERIA FOR INTERNATIONAL CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS SCHOLARSHIP

 

 

The Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (four-week study students and online programs excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses (online programs excluded).    

1. Tuition fees  

The Scholarship covers tuition fees.  

2. Accommodation fees  

Accommodation fees are under the overall planning and utilization of SISU to provide students (online programs excluded) with in-campus apartments (double rooms). Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from SISU. Students who live off campus are entitled to accommodation allowance of 700 CNY per person/month from SISU.  

3. Living Allowance  

Living allowance is granted by host institutions on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for undergraduates, one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person.  

4. Comprehensive Medical Insurance  

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by SISU in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 160 CNY for four-week study students, 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.  

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1. Applicants should log on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website to upload application materials online; and track the application progress, comments and results.  

2. When the application procedure arrives at the “Host institutions verification”, an applicant should log on SISU International Student Service System and register again.

3. SISU will verify application materials and examine the applicant.  

4. An applicant should log on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website to track the results three months ahead before school starts.    

5. The Application Deadlines (Beijing Time):    

(1) For program commencing in July, applicants must complete their applications before 15 April;

(2) For program commencing in September, applicants must complete their applications before 15 May 15;

(3) For program commencing in December, applicants must complete their applications before 15 September;

(4) For program commencing in March 2023, applicants must complete their applications before 15 November.

 

APPLICATION MATERIALS

1. For all applicants:  

(1). Application Form for SISI International Student Enrollment;  

(2). A scanned copy of the Passport Information Page that will not expire on or before his graduation/completion time;  

(3). An applicant shall submit a valid Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (or Police Clearance Certificate) issued by the local public security (such as the police station), usually issued within six months prior to the submission date of the application attached with a notarized Chinese or English translation only if it isn’t written in Chinese or English originally;  

(4). An applicant shall submit a copy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Medical examination results are valid for only six months;  

(5). Certificate of language proficiency. When applying for a Chinese-taught program, an applicant shall provide a valid HSK score report that meets the program’s language ability requirements; Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can be exempted from submitting HSK certificates if they can provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institution where they work.    

(6). A bare-headed identification photo;  

(7). A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions.    

2. For degree scholarship program applicants  

(8). Diploma and certificate of highest education (notarized photocopy). An applicant who is currently enrolled shall submit the proof of expected graduation or student status by his/her university;  

(9). Academic record. An applicant shall submit a notarized Chinese or English translation version if it isn’t written in Chinese or English originally;  

(10). A study or research plan written in Chinese or English (no less than 200 words/characters for undergraduates; no less than 500 words/character for scholars; no less than 1000 words/characters for postgraduates);  

(11). Applicants of the Scholarship for BTCSOL students are required to provide a reference letter from high school. Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.    

3. Applicants who have won the 2022 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate in various Chinese Bridge competitions should submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to SISU on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.    

4. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.
